How to Calculate Sea Freight Rates: FCL vs LCL

Sea freight rates include all transportation costs from the port of departure to the destination port. Understanding how rates are calculated helps you budget accurately.

FCL (Full Container Load) Rates

FCL is priced per container, not per weight. Common sizes:

20ft Container: Up to 28 CBM, about 28 tons

40ft Container: Up to 58 CBM, about 26 tons

FCL is cheaper per CBM when you fill the container.

LCL (Less than Container Load) Rates

LCL is priced by CBM (cubic meter) or weight, whichever is greater. Typical rate: $30-$80 per CBM depending on the route.

Additional Charges

Be aware of: THC (Terminal Handling Charge), documentation fee, customs clearance fee, BAF (Bunker Adjustment Factor), and CAF (Currency Adjustment Factor).
